DISILLUSION
The Phenomena of Scrupulosity
What is Scrupulosity?
PubMed defines scrupulosity as “a psychological disorder primarily characterized by pathological guilt or obsession associated with moral or religious issues that is often accompanied by compulsive moral or religious observance and is highly distressing and maladaptive.”
What’s the purpose of the project?
In short, bringing awareness to the issue and to also “get it all off my chest” so to speak. Religion was a big part of most my life, for the good and for the bad. I made the difficult decision to leave that behind after a lot of personal reflection. The art here represents the reflections of both the present and past.
Designing the booklet.
I wanted this to be as digestible as possible for anyone stumbling upon it. Mental health, religious beliefs, and any kind of heavy topics can be hard to talk about out in the open. I kept the symbolism obscure and the colors bright to soften things, while also giving some images a darker context as a kind of balance. I find there’s a lot of great hidden clues and obvious plots that add to the whole.
Sketches and ideating.
I started off this project by sketching as many themes as I could think of relating to the issue that came from my own experience. Below you’ll find a few selected pages from the many that I produced. ↓
